Species - Spiderfolk

Spider with upright torso, clutching a staff

Spiderfolk Druid, by Zana Arnautovic

Plenty of people have made spider races before - but none have ever been as adorable, or as quietly dangerous, as this.

The spiderfolk species is written for my game world, but general enough that you can slot it in anywhere with pretty minimal changes. They're small, creepy-cute, and skittish, creatures that are used to hiding in the darkness and only coming out when it's safe. They have exceptional darkvision, four (balanced) arms, can climb on ceilings, and if you upset them enough, an extremely poisonous bite.

Design-wise: I just love these lil' guys. They're a different spin on a spider species than you usually see - instead of horrible monsters, they're nervous and careful, only hesitantly coming out into the world. They don't have any sort of web-spinning abilities - I wanted them to have a strong sense of realism, so no innate spellcasting here. Spider Climb is obviously a tremendously powerful ability, and the biggest part of their power budget, but Venomous Bite is also clutch (lots of damage, with scaling like a very strong cantrip but no ability to function as a basic attack). In my lore, they're mostly skirmish fighters or druids, which are both very solid options for their kit (with Venomous Bite being an emergency tool).
